In addition to the culinary delights, the service at Akelare has also drawn praise for its attentiveness and warmth, particularly from the Mâitre d’. However, some guests have expressed a desire for more cohesive wine pairings during their tasting menus, indicating that the experience could be elevated even further with knowledgeable guidance.
As you savor each course, don’t forget to take in the stunning views—especially at sunset—as they add a magical backdrop to your dining experience. Stephane Amate put it perfectly: “Just spectacular. Well worth the price.” Indeed, Restaurante Akelare Pedro Subijana seeks to create not just meals, but cherished memories. The view from the restaurant is beautiful, especially if you sit by the window or grab a drink outside at sunset afterwards. The food was definitely creative and nicely presented, but honestly, not every dish felt worth the £800 per person price tag - I was expecting a bit more from a 3-Michelin star restaurant. One part I really enjoyed though was the quick tour of the kitchen and their “gastronomy lab,” which was a fun surprise and a good break after sitting for three hours straight. Overall, it was a nice experience, but I did walk away wishing the food had been more impressive for the cost.

What a wonderful location. The ambiance was exquisite. I loved the tour of the kitchen, and the staff was kind, especially the Mâitre ď. They changed sommelier on us mid tasting menu, and the replacement didnt do a great job of telling us anything about the wine, which was a disappointment. More concerning were the 2 hairs I found in the food and the dirty fork I was presented with on the 4th course. The food thematically consistent with local and seasonal trends, and the plating was what I generally what I expect at a 3 star restaurant . The lobster and kiskilla, fried mullet, and white duck were memorable, the artichoke flower was a bit of a miss, but its soup with chard and foie gras helped balance the texture miss.

Perched above the mountains overlooking the Bay of Biscay, the three Michelin starred Akelarre was one experience to remember. The bread basket was accompanied by not one, not two, but five amuse-bouches! By the time the first course made it to the table, my stomach was already waving a white flag. Still, there were eleven courses to go. But, take nothing away from the experience. The dishes were artful and imaginative; although quite a few of them didn't quite go according to my liking. They just didn't deliver the wow factor expected of a three Michelin standard. Akelarre's menu changes by the season. This round, they feature a rare dish that only on the menu for two months a year. The service was impeccable. And just when I thought the evening couldn’t get more interesting, we were invited into their kitchen and lab. Yes, behind the scenes to their flavour alchemy. While the overall experience was exceptional, I felt like I just wanted to meal to end halfway through because I was so stuffed. Once in a lifetime experience, checked.
